How to start your mobile money agent business

Jun 17, 2025
Mobile Money

Mobile money is at the heart of Ghana’s digital financial system. If you’re looking to start a profitable business with strong daily cash flow, becoming a mobile money (MoMo) agent could be your next smart move.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to become a mobile money agent for top networks like MTN, Vodafone Cash, and AirtelTigo, what you need to start, and insider tips to run a successful MoMo business.

‍

Why become a MoMo agent?

Mobile money agents serve as the backbone of digital finance in Ghana. They enable millions of people to send and receive money, pay bills, buy airtime, and access financial services — all through their phones.

Benefits include:

  • Daily cash income from commissions and value-added services

  • High demand in both urban and rural communities

  • Low barrier to entry compared to other small businesses

  • Opportunities for growth, including opening multiple locations or adding new services

‍

MTN MoMo agent SIM requirements

To officially operate as an MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) agent, you need an Agent SIM card (also called Merchant or Agent SIM). This specific SIM gives you access to MoMo Agent services and differsdifferent from a regular MTN SIM.

To complete your registration successfully and without delays, make sure you have the following.

‍

Business Certificate

You need to show that you’re operating a legitimate business. This can be:

  • A business registration certificate from the Registrar General’s Department

  • A sole proprietorship license

  • A recognized market trader association card (in some cases)

This proves you're not a “briefcase operator” and helps MTN know they’re partnering with a reliable agent.

‍

Valid National ID

You must present one form of government-issued identification:

  • Ghana Card (preferred and most widely accepted)

  • Driver’s License

  • Passport

  • Voter’s ID

This is for KYC (Know Your Customer) verification and security compliance.

‍

Letter of Application

This is a formal one-page letter addressed to MTN, stating:

  • Your intention to become a MoMo agent

  • The location and name of your business

  • Why you believe your location is ideal for MoMo services

  • Your commitment to follow MTN’s policies and serve the community

Consider it a mini business proposal showing you’re serious and ready to operate professionally.

‍

Premises/Physical Shop

You must own or have access to a secure, visible, and accessible business location such as:

  • A kiosk, container, or small shop

  • Located in a high-traffic area like a lorry park, market, school zone, or junction

  • Equipped with a table, chair, signage, and basic security measures (e.g., cash box)

Your location should be a place customers can visit regularly, not just a moving setup. MTN sometimes conducts site inspections to confirm this.

‍

Steps to becoming an MTN Mobile Money agent or merchant

To become an MTN MoMo agent, you can apply for an Agent or Merchant SIM card through three main channels: online registration, USSD, or by visiting an MTN service centre.

‍

Option 1: Register via USSD

You can easily request an MTN MoMo Agent SIM using your phone. Just follow these steps:

Once your registration is complete, an MTN representative will contact you within 72 hours to schedule a visit and inspect your business location.

‍

Option 2: Online Registration

You can also apply for an Agent or Merchant SIM online by following these steps:

  • Go to the MTN MoMo Merchant Application Portal

  • Read and accept the terms and conditions to begin your registration.

‍

  1. Sign Up and enter phone number.

‍

  1. Enter  username and password.

‍

  1. Choose a security question to protect your account if you lose your password. You’ll be redirected to the login page afterward.
  2. Log in with the username and password created in Step 4.
  3. Navigate to Request SIM and select Merchant (Momo Pay) to complete the form.

‍

‍

Method 3: Register at an MTN office

Another way to become an MTN Mobile Money agent is by applying in person at any authorized MTN service center. This option is ideal if you prefer face-to-face assistance or want to clarify specific details during the application.

‍

What to bring

  • A valid business certificate or permit

  • A copy of your national ID

Forms you'll complete

  1. Agent Application Form – Captures key business details such as business name, registration number, tax identification number (TIN), and the nature of your operations.

  2. Account Handler Form – Records personal details of the individual managing the agent SIM: full name, date of birth, and place of birth.

  3. Agent Agreement Form – Outlines the official terms and conditions of your partnership with MTN, including your responsibilities and MTN’s obligations.

Once submitted, MTN will process your application and issue your Agent or Merchant SIM card upon successful verification.

Best locations to start a mobile money business

Your location can make or break your MoMo business. Here’s what to consider when choosing where to operate:

‍

Limited competition

Avoid saturated areas. MTN recommends at least 50 to 100 meters between agents to ensure fair business distribution and customer access.

‍

Easy accessibility & visibility

Choose a location that’s easy to find and ideally sits on a main road or street where walk-ins are common.

‍

High Foot Traffic

Position your kiosk in areas like bus stations, markets, schools, universities, or commercial hubs—places with high daily movement.

‍

Security

Select a safe, well-lit area. Proximity to community police stations or other secure zones can help protect your business and customers.

‍

Proximity to Complementary Services

Being near services like grocery shops, ECG prepaid vendors, or eateries can increase customer visits and cross-service traffic.

‍

Common challenges faced by MoMo agents

While mobile money is a profitable business, agents often face real-world issues that can impact growth and operations:

‍

Fraud & scams

Mobile money agents are frequent targets for fraudsters who impersonate MTN staff or customers. Without strong fraud prevention practices, agents risk losing both money and trust.

‍

Operational hiccups

Network downtimes, system lags, and occasional overpayments are daily hurdles that can slow transactions and frustrate customers.

‍

Liquidity challenges

Managing both cash (for withdrawals) and e-money (for deposits) is critical. Many agents struggle with float shortages, especially in high-demand areas, leading to lost revenue and dissatisfied customers.

‍

Conclusion

With the right preparation, compliance with MTN’s guidelines, and a smart location, you can build a successful and profitable MTN Mobile Money business in Ghana.
